Malta si confronta sul Piano apostolico

Nel corso di questo anno accademico, il Territorio di Malta ha approfondito il piano apostolico di Provincia per vedere come attuarlo nei diversi apostolati.

I risultati di una varietà di incontri e riflessioni personali che hanno avuto luogo durante questo anno sono culminati in un seminario residenziale di due giorni per gesuiti maltesi tra il 16 e il 18 giugno. 32 gesuiti si sono riuniti a Mount St. Joseph per celebrare la memoria della storia trascorsa e guardare insieme al futuro con speranza.Il seminario è stato guidato da padre David Nazaar sj e padre Michael Bugeja sj. Il primo giorno, P. Nazaar ha invitato a guardare al passato, a ringraziare Dio per i tanti doni ricevuto, soprattutto durante gli anni del boom degli anni ’60, ’70 e ’80 e a tener conto anche alle aree grigie o a ciò che rattrista per l’oggi, qualsiasi cosa, dalla chiusura di una comunità alla morte di un caro fratello. Il secondo giorno, padre Michael ha fatto una presentazione dei dati demografici per Malta per i prossimi 10 anni, invitando i gesuiti a riflettere su dove il Signore sta guidando il territorio per capire dove, realisticamente, si dovrà essere nei prossimi 5/10 anni con le risorse disponibili. Quattro le domande che hanno guidato la riflessione: ridurre le comunità per avere meno comunità ma più forti? Ridurre i lavori apostolici per concentrarsi maggiormente sulle priorità della Provincia? Coinvolgere più leader laici? Coinvolgere le ONG partner? Il frutto della riflessione personale è stato poi condivisa in piccoli gruppi ed è seguita una sessione plenaria. La plenaria ha evidenziato la necessità di ridurre il numero di comunità e di opere nel prossimo futuro, ma si è avvertito il bisogno di avere altro tempo per continuare a riflettere insieme e ad avanzare verso una proposta comune.

During the course of this academic year the Territory of Malta began to focus on the province apostolic plan an to see ways of implementing this within the different apostolates we are already involved in.

The fruits of a variety of meetings and personal reflection that took place during this year culminated in a two day residential workshop for Maltese jesuits between the 16-18th June. 32 jesuits gathered at mount st joseph to enjoy time being together but most especially to celebrate our history whilst invited to look ahead in hope.

The workshop was led by Fr David Nazaar sj and Fr Michael Bugeja sj respectively. On the first day, Fr Nazaar invited the group to look back and celebrate the past. It was evident that there is so much to thank God for especially during the booming years of the ‘60s,’70s and ‘80s.  However we were also invited to look at the gray areas too or to what we grieve for today – anything from a closure of a community to a death of a dearly beloved brother of ours. The day proceeded with group work, plenary sessions and possible future life giving statements.

On the second day, Fr Michael  gave a presentation of the actual demographics for Malta with a view into the next 10 years. Inviting the Jesuits to reflect where the Lord is leading the territory and where they believed we should be in the next 5/10 years with the realistic resources that are available.

He invited them to focus on four questions:

Reduce communities to have fewer but stronger communities?

Reduce Apostolic Works to focus more on Province priorities?

Engage more lay leaders?

Engage partner NGO’s?

The fruit of this personal reflection was then shared in small groups and a plenary session followed. In the afternoon he then offered the jesuits two proposal for reflection in the small groups where time was allowed for discussion to happen in order to come up with a proposal for Fr Provincial in order to help him with the future planning for this territory.  Whilst the outcome of the plenary session was surely that we are being invited to reduce on the number of communities and works in the near future, we all felt that this process needs more time in order to continue reflecting together and journey towards a common proposal.  The two days were most beneficial and necessary in order to help us as a body understand the way forward.
